Contraception

What is contraception?

Contraception or ‘birth control’ refers to a range of methods that can be used to prevent unplanned pregnancies. With a variety of contraceptive methods available, different people at different life stages can choose the method that suits them best, providing the flexibility to tailor their choice based on their personality, lifestyle, preferences, and relationship status.

Who should decide on contraception?

It is important not to confuse family planning with the decision to choose contraception. While the decision to have children should involve an open discussion between partners, selecting a contraceptive method is a highly personal choice, primarily determined by the individual who will be using it.

Here are some tips that help in choosing the suitable contraception method:

Both parties should discuss all the available methods and assess the physiological, emotional, and financial challenges that come with them.

  • Always aim to choose the method with the least burden and give room for reassessment and adjustment. For example, if a couple decided to opt for OCPs because the use of condoms affected one partner’s pleasure but ultimately led to them/the other experiencing uncomfortable side effects, it would then be highly recommended to reconsider the choice of contraceptive method.

  • No one should be forced into using a contraceptive method, especially if it leads to side effects.

  • Many contraceptive methods are not affordable. Consider sharing the financial burden.
